Furniture shopping near Brentwood: what you'll find at Roomes

Brentwood is well supplied with shops and short of large furniture showrooms. The nearest one of any real size is about six miles away in Upminster, which is a short drive or a train with one change.

That showroom is Roomes. What follows is what's actually in it, what it costs to have things delivered back to Brentwood, and how to get there, so you can decide whether the trip's worth making before you make it.

How far is Roomes from Brentwood?

Roomes is about six miles from Brentwood town centre by road, which is a drive of 15 to 20 minutes depending on the traffic. The showroom is at 22-24 Station Road, Upminster, RM14 2UB, in the middle of the town rather than out on a retail park.

By train it's one change. The Elizabeth line runs from Brentwood to Romford, then the Liberty line runs from Romford to Upminster in nine minutes, with a single stop at Emerson Park. The Liberty line runs twice an hour off peak, so it's worth checking the times before you set off rather than after.

If you drive, there's a low cost car park on St Lawrence Road, RM14 2UW, directly behind the showroom. The same store is within easy reach of Romford, Hornchurch, Thurrock and east London, so if you're coming from that side of Brentwood the journey is shorter still.

What will you actually find in the showroom?

Roomes is a 42,000 sq ft furniture and interiors showroom, one of the largest in the South East, laid out as room sets rather than as rows of stock. There are over 80 sofa ranges and over 70 beds and mattresses out on the floor to try before you buy.

The departments run across sofas and chairs, beds and mattresses, bedroom furniturediningliving and home decor, with lighting, rugs, mirrors and accessories alongside them. There's also a made to measure curtains and blinds service, an interior design service, and a home cinema design and installation service run with a specialist partner.

The practical difference between that and a website is that you can sit on eight sofas in an afternoon and compare them against each other rather than against a photograph. The four things hardest to judge from a screen are fabric, seat height, seat depth and firmness, and all four take about ten seconds each to settle in person.

Roomes is a family business, run by the Roome family since 1888 and on Station Road in Upminster since 1927. The fourth and fifth generations run it now.

Which brands can you see near Brentwood?

The brands stocked at Roomes are Bontempi, Duresta, Ercol, G Plan, Himolla, Hypnos, Joules Lighting, Laura Ashley Lighting, Morris & Co., Nicoletti Home, Parker Knoll, Relyon, ROM, Sealy, Sleepeezee, Stressless, Tempur, The Lounge Co., Venjakob, Vispring and Vogue Williams.

That covers most of the names people arrive asking for. If you're after an Ercol dining table, a Parker Knoll or G Plan sofa, a Stressless recliner or a Tempur, Vispring or Hypnos mattress, they're on the floor to be sat on and lain on rather than ordered blind.

Ranges do change, so if you're making the trip for one specific model it's worth a call to check it's currently on display before you drive over.

Can someone help you work out what you need?

Yes, and there are two versions of it. The everyday version is free: the shop floor team will talk you through fabrics, frames, mattress types and sizes for as long as you want, and you don't need an appointment to browse.

The formal version is the interior design service, which is £250 per room, refunded in full when you go on to place an order of £5,000 or more. It covers space planning, furniture selection, colour schemes, lighting and finishing touches, delivered as a personalised scheme for a single room or a whole house. Appointments are held in the Upminster showroom or online, and there's a free 15 minute discovery call if you want to work out whether it's for you first.

If you're furnishing a new build or a whole house after a move, the design route is usually the one that saves money rather than the one that spends it, because it stops you buying three things that don't work together.

What about curtains and blinds?

Roomes makes curtains and blinds to measure, and measures and fits them as well as supplying them. The process runs as a consultation, then expert measuring, then bespoke making, then professional installation of the tracks, poles or blind systems.

The first appointment can be in store or at your home, which matters if you're dealing with a bay, a large glazed area or an awkward shape. There are hundreds of fabrics and styles, from sheer voiles and linen blends to velvets and blackout linings, and the blinds include Roman, roller, wooden Venetian, vertical and day and night.

Because the service sits inside the interior design side of the business, you can have the fabrics chosen against the furniture rather than separately from it.

Does Roomes deliver to Brentwood?

Yes. Roomes delivers across Essex, east London and the surrounding area using its own in house team rather than a courier, and Brentwood sits inside that area.

Delivery is priced in tiers. Premier delivery starts from £89 and covers the whole country. Bed delivery starts from £59 for local deliveries. There's a drop off service at £39 for smaller items in the local area, and home decor is sent free by courier. On the premier and bed services the furniture goes to the room you want it in, it's unwrapped, and the packaging is taken away if you'd like it taken away. Beds, wardrobes and dining tables are assembled by the delivery team.

Old mattresses can be collected when the new one is delivered. For other old furniture there's a recommended clearance and recycling firm, and it's worth raising before delivery day rather than on it.

Is there finance?

Yes, subject to status. Interest free credit at 0% APR is available over 10, 12, 18, 24 and 30 months, with a minimum spend that rises with the term from £500 on 10 months to £2,500 on 30 months, and a minimum deposit of 25%. Longer terms of 36 and 48 months are available at 9.9% APR representative with a minimum deposit of 10%.

Minimum order spend is £500. Representative example: a £2,000 order with a £500 deposit leaves £1,500 payable over 24 months at £62.50 a month, 0% APR, total amount payable £2,000. Credit is provided by Secure Trust Bank PLC trading as V12 Retail Finance. Roomes Stores Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and is the broker and not the lender. Full terms are on the finance page.

When is the trip worth it?

It's worth making the trip when you want to see, try and compare furniture properly before making a decision. Sofas, chairs and beds are things you'll live with for years, and comfort, size, fabric and feel can be difficult to judge from a screen.

And if you need something sooner, it's still worth getting in touch. While many of the ranges at Roomes are made to order, there are also items available from stock, alongside a large selection of clearance furniture. This includes ex-display pieces, cancelled orders and returned stock, all carrying a 12 month guarantee. Availability changes regularly, so if you're working to a particular timescale, give the team a call and they can let you know what options are available.

For bigger purchases, visiting the showroom really comes into its own. You might have narrowed your choice down to three or four options online, but seeing them side by side, sitting on them and comparing them in the same surroundings can make the decision much easier.

The same applies to beds and mattresses, where trying before you buy is particularly important. If you're planning a visit, it's worth reading why you should lie down on a bed first and how to test a mattress properly before you come.

Planning the visit

The showroom is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sunday 10.30am to 4.30pm, and 10am to 5pm on bank holidays. Weekday mornings are the quietest, which matters if you want space and time rather than a queue.

  • Address. 22-24 Station Road, Upminster, RM14 2UB. Full details are on the visiting the store page.
  • Parking. Low cost car park on St Lawrence Road, RM14 2UW, behind the store.
  • Phone. 01708 255300, worth a call first if you're coming for one specific range.
  • Appointments. You don't need one to browse. You do need one for the interior design service.
  • Access. Step free access and wide walkways throughout, for wheelchairs and prams.
  • Dogs. Well behaved dogs are welcome on a lead.
  • Time. Give yourself longer than you think for beds and sofas. Ten minutes on a mattress is the minimum that tells you anything.

The short version

Roomes is about six miles from Brentwood, in Upminster, and its 42,000 sq ft showroom has over 80 sofa ranges and more than 70 beds and mattresses to see, try and compare. Interior design, made-to-measure curtains and blinds, delivery, assembly and finance are also available.

If you want to see a wide choice of furniture properly rather than order on trust, it's well worth making the trip. And if you need something sooner, don't rule Roomes out — selected items are available from stock, alongside a large and regularly changing choice of clearance and ex-display furniture. If you're working to a tight timescale, give the team a call to find out what's available.
