Heritage Founded in 1888
Our journey began on Green Street, Upton Park, when founder James Roome opened a humble general store selling everything from haberdashery and homewares to clothing and corsets. In 1906, the business moved to Engayne Gardens, Upminster — a town poised for growth. That same year, James’s son (then freshly qualified as a draper) joined the business, and it was renamed James Roome & Son.
By the 1920s and 1930s, Roomes was evolving into something greater. After acquiring land in 1925, the business opened a new store on Station Road in 1927 — the first departmental store in the Hornchurch Urban District. The venture was hailed as “magnificent in its splendour and luxurious in its fittings,” a testament to our commitment to quality from the earliest days.
Over the decades that followed, Roomes continued to grow. Post-war expansions saw new acquisitions, including a dedicated furniture store. By the 1970s and 1980s, the store grew further with a three-storey extension to the department store. In the 1990s, we acquired a site on Station Road’s Talbot Garage and in 2001 opened a purpose-built 25,000 sq ft Furniture Store — the foundation of today’s showroom. Between 2006 and 2007, following the acquisition of a neighbouring DIY store, the furniture and interiors store was expanded to a vast 42,000 sq ft — making Roomes one of the largest and most distinguished furniture destinations in the region.
Today, while the department-store side of the business (formerly under the Roomes name) was sold to the family-owned Morleys Stores group, the Furniture & Interiors store continues to be run by the 4th and 5th generations of the Roome family — still driven by the same values, passion and dedication.
