How the Roomes showroom in Upminster grew to 42,000 sq ft

Roomes Furniture & Interiors has a 42,000 sq ft showroom at 22-24 Station Road in Upminster, one of the largest furniture stores in the South East. It opened in 2001 as a purpose-built 25,000 sq ft furniture store, and reached its current size in 2006 and 2007, when Roomes took over a neighbouring DIY store.

Our frontage on Station Road is small, so the showroom is a lot bigger than it looks from the street.

How big is the Roomes showroom?

Our Upminster showroom covers 42,000 sq ft, which makes it one of the largest furniture stores in the South East, and there's step-free access and wide walkways for wheelchair users and prams. That's room for sofas and chairs, beds, and dining, living and bedroom furniture, along with lighting, rugs and home décor.

Because sofas, beds and dining furniture are all under one roof at Roomes, you can choose all three in one trip.

How did the showroom grow to 42,000 sq ft?

It grew in two steps: a purpose-built 25,000 sq ft furniture store, which opened on Station Road in 2001, and the neighbouring DIY store, which we took over in 2006 and 2007 and brought into the furniture business. The 2001 store is the foundation of today's showroom.

The story goes back much further. James Roome, a master draper, opened a general store on Green Street in Upton Park in 1888, and Roomes opened on Station Road in Upminster on 4 May 1927. After the war, a dedicated furniture store followed in the late 1950s, and the business kept growing through the 1970s and 1980s. You can read the full Roomes story since 1888 on our heritage page.

What can you see in the showroom today?

Our furniture is set out in room settings, so you can see how a sofa, a dining set or a bed looks in a room, rather than on a screen or on its own. Our Friendly Furniture Experts are on hand for personal advice, with no pressure to buy.

Alongside the room settings, you'll find:

We're a pet friendly store, so you're welcome to bring your dog along while you shop. If you're coming to choose a dining table, our guide on how to choose a dining table and chairs will help you get the size right first.

We have more than 3,500 verified reviews on Feefo, if you'd like to hear what our customers say.

Is Roomes Furniture & Interiors the same as Roomes Fashion & Home?

No, they're separate businesses that share the Roomes name and history. They've been separate since 2009, when Morleys Stores bought the department store that trades as Roomes Fashion & Home.

Roomes Furniture & Interiors is the furniture and interiors showroom at 22-24 Station Road, run by the fourth and fifth generations of the Roome family. Roomes Fashion & Home is the department store at 41-49 Station Road, part of the Morleys Stores group. Both are part of the same Upminster story, and as they share a name and a road, it's worth checking the address before you visit.

How do you get to the Roomes showroom?

We're a short walk from Upminster station, which has District line, c2c and London Overground services, and there's low-cost parking on site: the car park postcode is RM14 2UW. The showroom is on the edge of east London, about two miles from Hornchurch, four from Romford and six from Brentwood. From Romford, the Liberty line runs direct to Upminster in nine minutes, and from Hornchurch it's two stops on the District line.

We're open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, Sunday from 10:30am to 4:30pm, and bank holidays from 10am to 5pm.
