Whether you’re searching for the perfect sofa or desperately seeking dining furniture, it’s often tempting to scroll the internet for a quick, easy and seemingly cheap solution.

It’s certainly true that buying online has its benefits. We’re all busy and increasingly time-poor, and the ability to shop from the comfort of our own homes does have its appeal. But by making an effort to shop locally and buy British-made products, we can all play a part in boosting our local and national economies – both of which need our support more than ever in this post-pandemic world.

But, aside from the feel-good factor of supporting your local retailers, what’s in it for you, the customer?

An experience to enjoy

We believe that shopping in actual bricks-and-mortar shops is an experience that has its own unique allure. Not only does it allow you to step away from the screen, but it also opens your eyes to the many treasures that are to be found right on your doorstep!

Investing in furniture or accessories for your home is a big decision and it’s important to get it right – especially if you’re spending a large amount of money. With the best will in the world, photographs on a screen can’t give you a true picture of what a product really looks like. And even the most well-written description isn’t the same as being able to touch, try and test out an item for yourself.

Best of all, when you buy in a shop there are no nasty surprises when the item is delivered to you at home. You won’t discover the colour isn’t quite right or the quality isn’t as you expected, because you’ve already seen your purchase in real life! This means you won’t have to deal with the hassle of sending the item back or arranging collection.

The best of British

The UK has a rich heritage in manufacturing and has long been associated with high-quality, bespoke furniture made from the very best materials. But it’s a sad fact that UK furniture manufacturing has dramatically declined over the past 50 years, and – according to findings from The British Furniture Confederation – around 50% of the furniture bought in the UK is now imported.

Buying British not only helps support the industry, but it gives you the peace of mind of knowing you’re investing in furniture that’s built to last. It also gives you a guarantee that it’s been manufactured in factories that provide workers with a minimum wage and safe working conditions, while also complying with the UK’s product standards. This isn’t always the case with items made in overseas factories.

As Essex’s largest independent furniture retailer and a proudly British business ourselves, we’re dedicated stockists of a wide range of UK brands that are celebrated the world over. From the fine timber and luxurious fabrics that characterise Parker Knoll furniture to state-of-the-art Collins & Hayes sofas, innovative upholstery from Ercol and the expertly crafted G Plan range, our showroom is home to ethically made, sustainable furniture that will stand the test of time and can even be handed down through generations. We’re firm believers in a ‘buy well, buy once’ philosophy, and we only work with manufacturers who share this belief.

Cutting your carbon footprint

Of course, as well as saving you money in the long run, investing in furniture that lasts a lifetime has the added benefit of reducing the amount of waste entering landfill. Buying British-made goods also makes a positive contribution to the global effort to cut carbon emissions and protect the planet by reducing the miles your furniture travels. We’re always looking for more ways we can reduce our environmental impact, so please contact us if you have any suggestions.
